A Time to Heal

Chapter Seven

When Evie came to, Lana was sitting next to her side. Her face was fresh and rosy, and her eyes were bright. Gone were the lines of sadness from her forehead, and the collection of dirt on her clothes.

"Evie!" She exclaimed happily. You're awake!" She bent down and gave Evie a big hug, and a little squeal of delight. "You were so touch and go there for a while; we were all worried about you." Just then the woman that greeted them before came into the room.

"Oh good, you're awake! I had hoped you would wake up today." In her hand, she held a bowl of soup. "Do you feel strong enough to eat this?"

"Oh, it’s okay Amelia, I can feed her until she gets her bearings. I am sure that her wrists are still in pain." Then like clockwork Evie felt a solid throbbing begin near her hands and echo up her elbow. In fact, there was a throbbing pain throughout her whole body. Then she remembered back to when she first came here, how Lana had helped her escape the dark cave she had been in, and how Caleb had tried to lead them back here but fell and hurt himself.

"Caleb? Is he okay?' Evie sat up with sudden awareness. She may not have known where she remembered him from, but she was still concerned. After all, it was her fault he fell down the hill. He had spun to yell at her, and that had caused him to lose his footing and send him flying down the side of the mountain.

The one Lana called 'Amelia' answered.

"Yes, Caleb is well. He is off by himself right now. He's been moping the past few days. Let me ask, Evie. Do you remember anything?" Evie felt confused by her question.

"I remember the dark cave I was in. I remember thinking that I was going to die there, and then Lana came and rescued me... then this voice, this kind voice spoke to us and led us out of the complete darkness with a ball of light. We followed it out into the forest. Where we wandered for a while, until we took shelter under a tree. From there we met Caleb, and then we ended up here." She searched Amelia's face for something and saw a trace of sadness cross her brow.

"Evie, do you remember anything before that?" Amelia placed her hand gently on Evie's shoulder.

"I'm sorry I don't... I don't remember anything. I don't remember who I was, or what I did before the cave. I don't remember if I have a family. I don't remember anything." Amelia listened with interest, her face growing with concern as Evie spoke.

"Evie ... you don't remember me at all?" Amelia searched Evie's face for anything, any sign of remembrance, but Evie just shook her head no. Amelia's eyes teared up, and she excused herself from the room. Lana and Evie were alone, and Lana took Evie's hand in hers.
